Hosts Thailand asked AFC to be used VAR in the confrontation with Vietnam at FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers without success.

Before the opening match of the second qualifier of World Cup 2022, hosts Thailand filed a proposal to AFC on using VAR.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was used in Thai League successfully since 2018 season. Thereby, FAT is confident it will be helpful in the great battle with Vietnam.

However the requirement has been rejected. FAT general secretary said: “FAT asked AFC to use VAR at World Cup 2022 qualifiers as our technology is ready.

However, AFC explained that since the World Cup matches will kick off at the same time in more than 10 stadiums with a round robin format. Each match need 3 or 4 referees in the VAR room, increasing a considerable number of referees.

Besides, each country has a different VAR use, with considering the quantity, technical conditions so it will not suitable to apply in home battle in many countries."

Despite denying using VAR in World Cup 2022, AFC agreed with Thailand on using this technology at AFC U23 Championship 2020 since VAR will be used at the same place and easier.
