Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium was engulfed in smoke after the Persebaya Surabaya home team lost 3-2 to PSS Sleman at the Indonesian Liga 1 2019 on Tuesday.

Problems appeared as soon as Jefri Kurniawan paved the way for the visitors to go ahead in the 16th minute and made fans worried about the worst things

David da Silva equalized for the home steam but a quick finish from Haris Tuharea and Yevhen Bokhashvili before the break made The Green Force unable to reverse the situation.

The match ended in 3-2 in favor of PSS Sleman, meaning a third consecutive defeat for Persebaya and creating a horrific riot after the match. Fans rushed to the pitch and set fire.

Part of the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium was burned by angry home fans, who were extremely disappointed with the loss.

Persebaya’s bad run in the tournament plunged them down to the 9th place on the table in the top flight tournament. PSSI has criticized the fans’ reaction.

“We would like to apologize for this. The fans’ action will badly affect their clubs. A true fan should keep good behavior. This action will be punished heavily,” PSSI’s Communications DirectorWidakdo said.

Indonesian fans attacked the audience and the Malaysian players after the home team was defeated 2-3 in the match between Indonesia and Malaysia in the 2022 World Cup qualifier on September 5th.

Gelora Bung Tomo is one of the venues for the 2021 U20 FIFA World Cup in Indonesia. The riot will affect the country’s hosting of the U20 FIFA World Cup.
