Syafiq Ahmad might be the key player on Tan Cheng Hoe’s squad in Malaysia’s match against Vietnam in Group G of the World Cup 2022 qualifiers.

Malaysia is currently ranked 3rd at the end of two match days after an impressive win over Indonesia and a close 1-2 defeat to UAE.

Malaysia depends primarily on two shooters, Sumareh and Syafiq Ahmad, although their offensive line is highly rated and includes a number of skilled players, who deploy a well-planned and varied attacking style.

Malaysia’s lineup for the World Cup qialifiers includes only three forwards: Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, Shahrel Fikri, and Syafiq Ahmad.

With  Idlan Talaha’s scoring skills beginning to fade with age and Shahrel Fikri prefering the left forward slot,  Syafiq Ahmad  is really the only choice for center forward position.

The 24-year-old player has put on an impressive display, scoring two goals for Malaysia already in the qualifiers. He possesses the speed, skills, and tricks to score goals.

“I can play at any position. My coaches decide my spot and my responsibility is just to do my best,” says Ahmad.

“When I was assigned to play in the center forward spot, I told myself that I needed to maintain good form as in the previous two matches. I think I have done well,” he added.

If he plays as a center forward, he will be supported by quality players, namely  Sumareh, Safawi Rasid, and Syhamer Kutty.

Malaysia will take on Vietnam in an away match at Hanoi’s My Dinh Stadium on October 10. Coach Park Hang-seo’s side has 1 point and is currently ranked 4th in Group G.
