The year 2018 saw continuous losses of Vietnam youth teams. notably, in AFF U18 championship 2018, Vietnam was pooled into a hard-fought group A with Indonesia and Thailand. Vietnam drew to Thailand 0-0 in the opening match and celebrated a triumph over Philippines and Laos before being defeated by Indonesia in an important match. While Vietnam needed only 1 point to go ahead; they, however, were beaten 0-1 and disqualified from the qualifying round. That was unacceptable for Vietnam.

The next defeat of Vietnam was at U16 level. Sitting in the same group with Indonesia once again witnessed a big 2-4 loss which made Vietnamese supporter disappointed.

In the early 2019, U22 Vietnam was not grouped with Indonesia in AFF U22 Championship. The two team encountered in the semifinal yet Indonesia won 1-0 then defeated Thailand to crown the championship.
