Despite playing away, Vietnam will have 4 advantages against hosts Thailand in its opening match of the World Cup 2022 qualifiers.

1. Players’ are confident of winning

In a rare move, the Vietnamese players have displayed confidence and in taking on Thailand. Through their social media posts and interviews with the media, all have said they are determined to beat the Thais and make their Vietnamese supporters happy. The ‘War Elephants’ are no longer bogeymen for the ‘Golden Dragons’, as they were in the past.

Confidence doesn’t mean complacency or an underestimation of their rivals. The Vietnamese players are aware of their opponents’ strength, especially Chanathip Songkrasin. Thailand’s head coach Akira Nishino rose to fame by leading Japan to the knockout stage of World Cup 2018.

Still, team Vietnam, coached by South Korean Park Hang-seo, are upbeat about defeating Thailand.

2. Key players are at their best

While Thailand boasts Chanathip Songkrasin and Theerathon Bunmathan , Vietnam has quality players in Quang Hai, Van Toan, Tien Linh, and Van Lam, whose impressive performances have created success for their clubs.

Quang Hai, Van Toan, and Tien Linh have scored well, while goalie Van Lam has done a splendid job for Muangthong United in the Thai League in 2019.

Midfielders Hung Dung, Duc Huy, and Xuan Truong have been playing well.  Wing midfielders Trong Hoang and Van Hau have bounced back rapidly from injury.

Vietnam will have play at 100% of their ability to neutralize Thailand’s unpredictable strategy. A Quang Hai penalty goal or a Van Toan sudden finish could bag a win for Vietnam.

3. Close bond exist between head coach and players

Tonight’s match will be Akira Nishino’s first competitive match since he began coaching the Thai national team in late July. The Thai players haven’t had much time to get used to their new coach’s style, especially stars like Chanathip Sonkrasin, Theerathon Bunmathanor, and Thitipan Puangchan, who have been playing abroad. The ‘War Elephants’ style of play under this coach is still a mystery.

Vietnam, on the other hand, brings to Thailand experienced players who are used to the tactics of coach Park Hang-seo. Park focuses on motivating his men, who are disciplined in following their coach’s instructions.

4. Favorable head-to-head history

In their head-to-head history, Thailand have racked up more wins, but since Park’s arrival, Vietnam has overwhelmed Thailand at all levels, notably at this year’s King’s Cup, for which Thailand is now seeking to revenge.
